From the Treatment Room: The most important step in your skincare routine.

When we think about healthy, glowing skin, we often focus on the products that feel the most “active”—serums, moisturizers, masks, and treatments. But the truth is, healthy skin starts with one simple step: cleansing.

Clean skin is healthy skin. You’ve heard me say that a hundred times!

Cleansing is more than just washing your face. It is the foundation of your entire skincare routine. A good cleanser removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, pollution, and daily buildup, while also helping your skin stay balanced and comfortable.

And that balance matters. When your skin is properly cleansed, the products you apply afterward can work more effectively. Your serums, moisturizers, and treatment products all perform better when they are applied to skin that is clean, calm, and ready to receive them.

But here’s something many people don’t realize: not all cleansers serve the same purpose.

Your skin is a living organ, and it changes constantly. Weather, stress, hormones, travel, seasonal shifts, and lack of sleep can all affect how your skin looks and feels from one day to the next. Some days your skin may feel dry or sensitive. Other days it may feel oily, congested, or dull.

That’s why I like to think of cleansers as tools in your skincare toolbox. Having more than one cleanser doesn’t mean your routine has to be complicated. It simply gives you options so you can respond to what your skin needs in the moment.

Choosing the right cleanser isn’t only about your skin type—it’s also about your skin’s current condition. If you’re not sure of the difference, take a look at my previous blog post on Skin Type vs. Skin Condition.

A well-formulated cleanser should leave your skin feeling clean, soft, and balanced—not tight, dry, or “squeaky clean.” That tight feeling after cleansing is often a sign that your cleanser is removing too much and disrupting your skin’s natural barrier.

And remember: don’t rush your cleanse. Take your time, massage the cleanser into your skin, and allow the ingredients to do their job.

Choosing the Right Tools for Your Skin

  • Cream Cleansers:  Rich and nourishing, cream cleansers are ideal when skin feels dry, dehydrated, or sensitive. They cleanse while helping maintain moisture and comfort.

  • Foam Cleansers:  Light and refreshing, foam cleansers are often a good choice for oily or acne-prone skin or when you need a deeper cleanse. They help remove excess oil and leave skin feeling fresh and clean.

  • Gel Cleansers:  Gel cleansers provide a deeper cleanse and are often beneficial for combination, oily, or congested skin. Some also contain ingredients that gently exfoliate and help keep pores clear.

  • Oil Cleansers:  Oil cleansers are excellent for removing makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, and daily buildup. They are often used as the first step in a double cleanse, but they can also be helpful when skin is feeling dry or in need of extra nourishment.

  • Micellar Cleansers:  Gentle and easy to use, micellar cleansers lift away dirt, oil, and makeup without irritating the skin. They’re especially helpful for sensitive skin, a quick morning cleanse, after a workout, or when you’re on the go.

The Takeaway

Cleansing is more than the first step in your routine—it sets the tone for everything that follows. By keeping a few cleanser options in your skincare toolbox, you can better support your skin as it changes from day to day and season to season.

The goal isn’t simply to wash your face. The goal is to create a healthy, balanced foundation so your skin can function at its best.

This week, take a closer look at your cleanser. Is it supporting your skin’s current condition—or is it time to add another tool to your skincare toolbox?
