Q. How often should I get a facial? A. This is so personal. If your skin looks or feels dry or dehydrated, or you’re experiencing specific skincare issues, once a month is probably the answer. It’s quite possible that your skin needs specialized products and treatments, applied on a regular basis, to help heal the skin. Some clients with no skincare issues keep a monthly regimen just because facials feel good and are a great form of self-care. But, if you are diligent with your home skincare routine, use the right products and have no issues with your skin, consider getting facials with the change of each season. Q. How do I know what skincare brand is best for me? A. There are so many skincare brands on the market. It can be overwhelming. I recommend that you pick a skincare brand that aligns with what you believe, and what you want for your skin. For example, when I researched brands to carry in my shop, the combination of natural and science-based products was important to me. Additionally, I wanted to use and carry products that smelled good, felt good on the skin, and achieved the desired result. Q. How often should I exfoliate? A. There are basically 3 ways to exfoliate:
Physical exfoliation of the skin involves the use of a granular scrub which, when applied to the skin, physically buffs the skin’s surface, and thereby removes dead skin cell build-up.
Chemical exfoliation includes the use of enzymes and acid-based products that have an exfoliating effect as they dissolve the protein bonds that exist between dead skin cells, allowing for dead skin cell removal.
Mechanical exfoliation involves the use of a machine or device to exfoliate the skin. Commonly known mechanical exfoliators include Microdermabrasion and Laser treatments.
I like combining physical and chemical exfoliation, and I’m not a big fan of mechanical exfoliation. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin, I think using a chemical exfoliator once a week and a physical exfoliator twice a week is a good place to start.
